The Holy Ark

The Holy Ark

The holy ark and the menorah from the ancient synagogue in Beit Alfa, from the 5th century AD. The mosaic displays the holy ark through the veil, which is open to both sides, and the ark has a pediment. On the pediment is an eternal flame with two birds. On either side of the ark are two lit menorahs, and on the side of each of them are traditional ritual objects: Shofar, Lulav, Etrog, and Machta (incense shovel.) Two lions guard the ark from each side.
